Rostock- discovering the town near the Baltic Sea part 1- Nienhagen and Warnemunde

It was another Friday in Germany and Manuel and I were wondering which city in Germany to visit for the weekend after church on Sabbath. So we asked our German flatmate Magda for an idea of where to visit. She suggested Rostock and said they have nice beaches there. She mentioned that she had a friend there and we could stay there overnight. However, after calling her friend, she realised that she wasnt at home, but we decided to go to Rostock anyway. On Saturday, while at church, Manuel prepared things for the trip since we didnt the day before. We heard about rideshare (mitfarbesomething-long german word which I don't remember now) and decided that we could use this method of travelling to save money. We found a girl who wanted to travel with us to Rostock. Of course, we were happy but on Friday she told us that she didn't want to go anymore. We were disappointed of course but we were still eager to go to Rostock. After church, we ate lunch and our other German flatmate Benny told us that there was a huge storm in the Baltic Sea and it caused a lot of flooding in that area. Rostock is located near the Baltic sea and so he was basically warning us though he wasn't sure where exactly the flooding was. He wished us luck and we set off for our Rostock adventure.

On the way to Rostock, there was traffic in Hamburg and we got lost. However, as with all our travel experiences, we always found our way. Manuel used an online map with directions for our travels in Germany since we were not familiar with this country. We were a bit wary at first on our way to Rostock since we didn't see a lot of cars in the route for that town. I remember looking at the lush green landscape on both sides on the road which indicated that we were in the "country" area.We took the route to Nienhagen. At home,we had looked online at pictures for the beaches in Rostock and picked a random point on the map called Nienhagen and it looked beautiful! We figured it would be a nice idea to visit there. I had the strong urge to urinate and there was no bathroom nearby. The only thing present which I really didnt want, was the option to go in...the bushes... As a child going on trips to the countryside in Jamaica with my parents to visit relatives, whenever any of us needed to use the bathroom, my father would pull over and let us go in a secluded area surrounded by bushes. I hated this idea for fear that someone would see me ^^ I had to muster up some courage as Manuel pulled over near a field of tall golden stalks from a corn field I suppose. I carried tissue with me and walked a good distance away from the road and the public eye, hoping that no one would be coming from the fields to see and I did what I had to do. I hurried back to the car and asked him to pour water on my hands so I could wash them.

We were not entirely sure on how to get to Nienhagen and so as I love to suggest, I told Manuel " let us ask someone". I love interacting with locals by asking for directions and seeing their reaction. We drove until we ended up in a town called Bad Doberan. I suggested we go to a gas station since those people there normally know how to locate places in the area or maybe even a map could be there. We went inside and no one was there to attend us. I think I saw a few customers. We waited a bit for someone to help us to the map behind the desk, but when we saw that no one came, Manuel went behind the desk to look at the map. A lady who was clearly furious came from a room behind a door and got upset at him for being there, probably thinking we were trying to steal something and so Manuel moved. He asked her if she spoke English, French or Spanish and she answered angrily " nein!". We quickly left and went in the car to find our way to Nienhagen. We then saw an old man with a little red-haired boy who I thought was adorable. The old man was willing to help although his English was a bit hard to understand due to his heavy German accent.  He was deep in his giving of direction but he wasnt helping us to go to the place we wanted. He was directing us to Rostock. On top of that, while talking as if he never intended to stop, some liquid from his mouth made its way inside the car and fell on my hand, but just a little, not a alot for me to have a panic attack. However, I still had  to wipe my hand with hand sanitizer two or three times. We told him, ok danke, and he still tried to explain to us how to get to Rostock. Then, after a while, feeling like he had done a great job, bid us farewell and we went off. I actually liked him and found it cute how he tried to help us, but I was not pleased at all with the saliva encounter!

If I remember well, we were passing some houses and I asked Manuel to ask the old man and old lady seated outside, but after that episode and how awful the lady was, he decided not to.

Finally we arrived in the area and drove down until we saw the beach.

I was thrilled and Manuel paid for parking and we rushed to see what the beach was like.  To our dismay, it looked nothing like the beach we saw on the pictures. Instead, it was brown and dark, due to the storm I suppose.

We walked around to observe and compared it to what I normally expect from a beach while in Jamaica. It was the first European beach I visited and so I wasn't sure what to expect. It was a windy and cool day.The water was dark as opposed to our many shades of blue water, people were in pants and long shirts as opposed to bath suits in Jamaica. As you can see, I even had to wear a sweater and pants to the beach!  I had never done that before. The people around me appeared as if it was a normal thing.
The water washing up on the shore had a frothy look that resembled the foam from the beer. I joked that it is really a German beach. Manuel and I took pictures.

foam on my shoe!

The sea seemed rough and I had fun walking on the short wooden poles lined in the sea.

After exploring the water, we walked on the shore and saw a man and his daughter near a a muddy area with a cliff with water coming out of an opening. I joked that it resembled the female genitalia. The little girl was having fun sliding in the  mud and I laughed on seeing that and thought it must be fun. I walked in the mud with my cloth-material shoes in order to take a better picture of  the cliff with the water coming out. My shoes totally got covered in the light brown mud, even after Manuel warned me not to walk in it any further.

We had to go back to the females' bathroom on the beach to wash my shoes in the sink and then dry it with the hand dryer. A lady entered and was startled to see that Manuel was also in the females' bathroom.

We left the beach at Nienhagen and returned to the car and decided to get started with dinner. We stopped at this little gazebo outside near where there was a lot of police directing cars out of the streets flooded with water. We wanted to heat up our food but we had no lighter(because Manuel left it ^^). I suggested that we ask one of the police man since most Germans seemed to smoke. We didn't get any lighter and so Manuel said that he would buy a lighter. I didnt like the idea since it was on the Sabbath. He went to Lidl and there was none. Then he went to Penny Markt while I waited in the car and while waiting I saw some men looking at the license plate of the car. A few others came and looked and I observed the passer-bys. I guess it was because it was a French license plate. Manuel came back with not one but three lighters, since they only sold them in the pack with three. I asked, "What are we going to need THREE lighters for?" We discussed selling it to some smokers we know, like our French flatmate Baptiste. We didnt have a comfortable place to eat and we saw a next beach nearby and so we returned to the car to visit that beach.

The beach was in the area of Warnemunde. The area had many nice houses and a hotel nearby. We also saw a huge Scanidavian cruise ship on the sea. Manuel said that it was the Baltic Sea and that Sweden was actually in front of us.

We walked around the beach and thought it seemed prettier than the one at Nienhagen. I suggested that we should go there again the following day.

While walking around, something caught my eye that I had never seen before in my life on a beach! There was a naked old man standing up quite proudly on the shore looking around and smiling. I was shocked and I just had to take a picture because I thought he was just being quite rude perverted. Later on, I realised (as you will too in part 3) that he was just standing as a normal citizen as if he was clothed and simply being a friendly, smiling old man.

I was still appalled and wondered how can they let this man just stand around naked and there are children around and maybe he could be perverted! I took pictures with  Manuel and made sure to include the old naked man in the background ;)

We decided it was time to leave as it was getting late and when we went back to a new area where we parked our car, we saw a lovely red apple on the ground. I wondered where it came from because the trees above didnt seem like an apple tree. It was not until I saw two boys in a nearby hotel throwing apples on the ground from their balcony on the 2nd floor, that I realised where the apple came from. I thought they were so wasteful, because in Jamaica we pay a lot of money for apples like that . However, I then found it similar to how our mangoes are left to fall on the ground and rotten when they are too ripe. We left that parking lot to find somewhere to eat.

While driving by some houses on our way from beach, I joked to Manuel that we should ask someone in one of the houses if we could sleepover as  the visitors from couch surfing do at our flat. We were not entirely sure where we would sleep but we found a new parking lot on which to have our dinner. Now it was dinner time and food was all that was on our mind. I warmed up the dinner as a good housewife ^^. Manuel made canneloni and it was delicious :)  I just warmed it up :P

After eating, Manuel proposed for us to sleep at a hotel, but I refused as I didnt want to cause any extra expenses. So we agreed to sleep in the car. He did a great job transforming the car into a bed and it made the night's sleep quite comfortable although I still had a fear that someone would come and hit the glass and harm us.

Quite extreme I know, but I had never slept in a car before. It seems to be a normal experience for some of these people there in the parking lot. A lot of them had trailers/mobile homes and they seems quite comfortable while I was worrying about a random serial killer ^^

I remember seeing a couple who parked next to us and they were arranging their vehicle too into a bedroom. They didn't seem all that friendly as having us for a one night neighbour. The other neighbour on our left was an old man and his wife and they didn't seem friendly either. It didn't matter as deep in my mind, I was wishing for it to be morning quickly. At one point, I had to urinate and it was one of the most terrifying times of my life (yes, exaggeration ^^ as the most terrifying one was to come in France the night before I left for Belgium) to go behind the car in a bush in darkness in an area I knew nothing about. I quickly went back to the car and made sure to use towels to cover the windows from the inside.

The car became our little room and it was designed for a princess as Manuel said, as it even had a place to put my plastic bracelets, which by the way he said causes us bad luck :P. I then said, if my father ever knew I was sleeping in a car, he would be very angry. I reassured Manuel that it was ok and that I didn't mind, as long as we were safe.

30 july : This day we woke early lol around 8.00 am i think. It was saturday, so it was Sabbath. We had breakfast, we have bath and you have dress for go to the church. I have carry you there and i came back to the house because we prepared near of nothing for our week end to the Baltic Sea.  So i prepared my clothe, the duvet...and the fridge. put all that in the car. Rostock- a stroll through the Japanese Garden and the town of Rostock part 2

On day 2 of our adventure in Rostock, we decided to see what else this town had to offer. After visiting the beach with that odd man, we wondered what else could we possibly see. Little did we know what was in store for us for the remainder of our visit. It was July 31 and according to Manuel, we woke around 7:30/8:00am. We had slept in the car the night before and had no where to wash up  after our slumber. On the way to Rostock, I indicated that we could wash up in the bathroom at Burger King.We emptied our bowels and washed up to present a fresh morning face ^^

Afterwards while driving again, we noticed a park and I begged Manuel to let us go there to just relax and walk around. There was a lot of water on the ground from the flooding I suppose and fallen trees in our path as well.

nope, that isn't a lake or pond behind me, it's just water from the flood :P

While walking around I noticed a lot of naked statues and I began to wonder if this was somehow a "Rostock" thing. ^^ The statues were quite amusing to see and it's like they all had a different story behind them and some were quite odd, yet very creative in my view.  I had a little fun with some of them too and if I could, I would take pictures and play with all of them! However, there were too many and we became tired as it was a big place to walk around.

It makes you wonder, what was he thinking about? Was he sad, depressed or just wondering what to eat for lunch?

These two boys were having a great time somersaulting !

This one is my favourite. It looks like she is resting yet still smelling the flower placed under her head. To me,it also looks like she is just dreaming.

It's like I could feel his pain and sympathize with him. Who knows what hardship this guy may have been through. I had to just touch him to let him know that " I understand".

I still don't know how to describe what is happening in this statue ^^

I think is a beautiful statue. It's like they were just having a casual conversation. I played at whispering in her ear as if to ask " do you know you're being exposed?"

adorable at how comfortable he is with them

A boy and his donkey...my thought on this at that moment, who would want to ride a horse naked though?

It was not until we saw this block of stone that we realised we were in a Japanese garden. We saw a lake or pond, I never could tell the difference really :P and we saw a duck house, ducks, swans and people with kids walking around the park.

I wanted to play with the baby swans (signets) but Manuel said the mother would attack me, so I stayed clear of that path ^^

Duck house ;)

After visiting the garden, we decided it was time to leave and on our way to the car, something red and shiny caught my eye! It was a tree with little red fruits. Before tasting it, I asked Manuel if it was ok, since I had no idea what this fruit was or if it was even edible. Since he is European and is familiar with edible fruits there, I trusted him. To my distasteful surprised, this deceiving sweet fruit tasted so "stainy" and horrible! I dont know what went wrong but my expression sure made Manuel laugh a lot.

video below :

After that episode, we decided to see the town and the harbour. At the place we parked, I noticed the name of a street that caught my attention and I just had to take a picture of it! I always get excited when I see certain people's name on street signs. I guess you can say it is kinda my thing to take photos of signs ;)

I loved taking pictures in the town. However,it was a Sunday and so most places were closed, so I didnt get a chance to explore the malls. I remember standing in the streets posing for the pictures and dodging cars whenever they drove through the streets. The buildings were huge and European looking ^^ The only stores that were open were souvenir stores and I told Manuel that we had to get something to remember this town. I bought a little string of fish keyring and he bought a little seagull. The man in the store was friendly and in the other store, the person didnt seem to mind much.

Rostock princess ^^

Wouldn't it be fun to go sliding on this?!

random me!

I love the narrow look of this street!

I tried to enjoy Rostock as much as I could but Manuel tried to find the negative things of this town and so he took them in pictures lol. He found it quite funny to take pictures of the nuclear reactor and the big pipe letting out water in the stream and the trees and water in the path. I discouraged him to take pictures of them but he did anyway lol.

So now it was time for the harbour. I wasnt sure which sea it was but according to Manuel , it was the Baltic sea. It looks very pretty and dark blue and it was nice to see all the ships. I joked about swimming in the water.  I was having a nice time observing the scenery when I joked to Manuel that I will leave him and find a red haired German, if I remember well. He laughed and said something like " When he sees how you really are, he will leave and I got angry jokingly and said I will leave him and use the rest of the money I have to travel home and ask for directions. I told him I only needed him for the ride back to Oldenburg and Belgium lol. Not a very nice thing to say but he knew I was joking :)

Anyway, I complained that he was awful for saying such a thing and he apologised and we went back to the car to return to the beach in Warnemunde. :)
